Shehu Sani Sparks Fresh 2027 Debate Over Power Rotation in Nigeria
A fresh political storm is brewing as former senator Shehu Sani has taken a bold stand on the heated issue of zoning ahead of the 2027 presidential election, insisting that fairness demands the South completes its turn in power.
His statement is already generating intense reactions across Nigeria, especially among supporters of both northern and southern political interests.
Speaking on the matter, Sani pointed out that the North, under Muhammadu Buhari, recently held power for eight years. He argued that it would be unfair and destabilizing for power to shift back to the North when Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a Southerner, has only completed half of that cycle.
According to him, justice and balance require that a southern leader be allowed to complete a full eight-year tenure before power rotates again.
He also sent a strong message to opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, suggesting that it may not be the right time for northern politicians to push for the presidency.
In a surprising twist, Sani even advised opposition parties to consider fielding southern candidates in 2027 to maintain political stability and respect the unwritten zoning arrangement.
Looking ahead, he proposed that when power eventually returns to the North in 2031, it should go to the North Central region to ensure fairness across all northern zones.
As the 2027 election approaches, this statement has reignited the long-standing debate about equity, justice, and unity in Nigeria’s leadership structure.
What do you think about this argument? Should power remain in the South till 2031, or should every region contest freely?
