“SAD TIMING AS EL-RUFAI’S MOTHER DIES WHILE HE REMAINS IN CUSTODY” — ATIKU AIDE REACTS, SPARKS NATIONAL DEBATE

The death of Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, mother of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has triggered emotional reactions across Nigeria’s political space, with an aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar describing the situation as deeply painful and unfortunate. Alot of people won’t agree with this, Watch Video Now.

Demola Olanrewaju, who previously served as Senior Political Assistant to Atiku Abubakar, expressed his condolences on Friday, March 27, 2026, via his official X account, while also raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding El-Rufai’s reported detention.

He described the situation as distressing, noting that the former governor has allegedly remained in custody during Ramadan, a period he said should ordinarily be marked by reflection and family unity.

Olanrewaju further stated that the timing of the bereavement adds emotional weight to the situation, especially if El-Rufai is unable to attend his mother’s funeral. He emphasized that in Nigerian culture, burial rites are highly significant, and absence during such moments can be particularly painful for families.

According to reports referenced in circulation, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai passed away in Egypt, where she had been receiving medical care. While details of her illness have not been widely disclosed, her death has drawn sympathy from across the political spectrum.

The comments have since generated mixed reactions online. Some Nigerians focused on the legal and political implications surrounding El-Rufai’s situation, while others urged compassion and sensitivity, stressing the need to prioritize humanity during moments of loss.

The development continues to fuel wider conversations about the intersection of politics, justice, and personal tragedy in Nigeria’s public life.

What’s your take on this situation? Should personal tragedy override political or legal processes in cases like this?
