SHS double-track system to end by 2027
The government says it is increasing infrastructure in all Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country to accommodate more students ahead of plans to end the double-track system by 2027.
President John Dramani Mahama explained that the expansion will include the construction of new dormitory blocks, lecture halls, dining facilities, and auditoriums.
He said these improvements will help return schools to a normal academic calendar where all students report at the same time.

He noted that the decision aims to improve education by increasing contact hours between teachers and students. According to him, more teaching time will lead to better learning outcomes across senior high schools.
The President made the announcement at Sawla during his “Resetting Ghana” tour of the Savannah Region on Friday, May 22.
“In 2027, no Senior High School will be doing double track. We’re reverting to the old system. Everybody will go to school at the same time to increase contact hours with the teachers. And so, we’re going to expand the infrastructure in our Senior High Schools,” President Mahama said.
He further stated that the government is also focusing on improving the overall quality of secondary education nationwide.
“We are investing in improving the quality of secondary education. And so the secondary schools that are considered category C, we’re going to invest in 30 of them to move them from category C to category B,” he said.

Officials say the upgrades form part of a broader effort to strengthen the education system and ensure that schools can handle increased enrolment without overcrowding when the double-track system ends.
