Dollar to Naira exchange rate today, April 22, 2026

The Nigerian Naira continues to experience shifts across the various segments of the foreign exchange market today, Wednesday, April 22, 2026. As the trading day unfolds, stakeholders and market participants are closely monitoring the data emerging from the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) and the parallel market.

Official Market Trends

In the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), the Naira opened the session with a slight adjustment in value against the US Dollar. Early trading data indicates that the exchange rate is hovering around 1,348.77 NGN per 1 USD. This follows a period of marginal volatility where the rate dipped as low as 1,346.30 NGN before stabilizing in the mid-1,340s.

The official window remains the primary channel for legitimate business transactions and government-backed forex allocations, with the Central Bank of Nigeria continuing its efforts to maintain liquidity through periodic interventions.

Parallel Market Performance

The parallel market, often used as a gauge for retail demand and informal currency exchange, shows a wider spread compared to the official figures. Reports from various currency hubs in Lagos, Abuja, and Kano suggest that the Dollar is being traded between 1,450 NGN and 1,470 NGN.

The persistent gap between the NFEM and the parallel market reflects ongoing demand pressures for invisible transactions, such as personal travel allowances and small-scale imports, which often bypass official documentation requirements.

Market Outlook

Economic analysts suggest that the current performance of the Naira is tied to global oil price fluctuations and the country’s foreign reserve levels. While the official rate shows signs of consolidation, the parallel market remains sensitive to speculative activities.

Investors and the general public are advised to keep an eye on subsequent updates throughout the day as closing figures from the FMDQ Securities Exchange will provide a definitive direction for the currency’s performance for the remainder of the week.
