Alaafin denies rift with Makinde, Olubadan

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has dismissed reports suggesting a breakdown in relations between himself, Seyi Makinde, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, insisting that no such discord exists.

Speaking with journalists in Oyo on Tuesday, the monarch firmly rejected claims of tension with the Oyo State Government, describing Governor Makinde as supportive and reiterating his preference for resolving any concerns through direct and private communication.

“I have nothing against the government. The governor has been very nice. If there is anything, I will meet him one-on-one,” he said.

He equally dismissed insinuations of strained relations with the Olubadan, emphasising that both royal institutions continue to coexist in mutual respect and understanding.

“My relationship with the Olubadan is cordial. There is no misunderstanding,” he stated.

The Alaafin condemned the spread of what he described as unfounded rumours, attributing them to bloggers and individuals intent on drawing attention, while warning against the dangers of misinformation targeting revered traditional institutions.

Addressing his recent low public profile, Oba Owoade disclosed that he had been unwell but is now recuperating and set to return fully to official duties.

“I have been indisposed for some time, but I am recovering and will soon return fully to public engagements,” he said.

Providing further clarification on an incident that sparked widespread speculation, the monarch explained that a perceived handshake snub involving the Olubadan was merely a misunderstanding and has since been resolved without issue.

“I extended my hand to him, but he later explained that he did not see it. I don’t see it as an offence. We later spoke and met again. There is no issue,” he added.

He also expressed gratitude to the media for its continued engagement, acknowledging journalists as key stakeholders in national development and effective information dissemination.

Looking forward, the Alaafin revealed that arrangements are ongoing for his birthday celebration on July 18, during which three individuals will be honoured with chieftaincy titles.

On developmental strides within the Oyo Kingdom, he announced the establishment of a land committee to address disputes, alongside plans for a new civic centre and the renovation of the palace.

Reiterating his commitment to peace, unity, and progress, Oba Owoade urged the public to disregard baseless narratives and to continue supporting traditional institutions in their role of fostering stability and development.
