Kenneth Okonkwo Sounds Alarm: Nigerian Judiciary Must Uphold Ethics or Risk Collapse

Prominent lawyer and politician Kenneth Okonkwo has issued a stern warning to Nigeria’s judiciary, urging judges to strictly uphold ethical standards or risk the public losing faith in the justice system. If you’re in nigeria right now, Watch Video Now.

Speaking on Arise Television on Wednesday, Okonkwo stressed that the integrity of the legal profession depends entirely on the system’s ability to discipline its own members when they fall short.

“Members of the bench must observe their own ethics, and they have to punish every anti-social behavior amongst them in order to deter others,” he said.

Okonkwo highlighted concerns about the growing trend of judges socializing with individuals who have business before the courts. Such practices, he warned, erode public trust and make it harder to maintain impartiality, which he described as a cornerstone of a fair legal system.

He also called for continuous training and professional development for judges, emphasizing that staying updated on legal knowledge and global best practices is vital for keeping the judiciary sharp and morally accountable.

“If corrupt or improper practices are left unchecked, they risk becoming part of the culture,” Okonkwo cautioned.

For those following Nigeria’s legal system, the full breakdown of Okonkwo’s warning about ethics, corruption, and the survival of judicial integrity is eye-opening—see the details here.

Okonkwo’s message is clear: the judiciary must reclaim its role as a disciplined, neutral, and trustworthy shield for ordinary Nigerians, or risk allowing “abominations” to define the system.

What do you think—can the judiciary reform itself, or are these warnings too late? Drop your opinion in the comments and share this with someone concerned about justice in Nigeria—it’s a call the nation cannot ignore.
