Outside The Arabian Peninsula, Nowhere Was The Sharia Applied, Like It Is Applicable In North – Usman
A heated debate about Sharia law in Nigeria has been clarified by Dahiru Usman, Islamic law professor at Bayero University Kano, who insists that nowhere outside the Arabian Peninsula enforces Sharia especially its criminal laws on serious crimes like it is applied in northern Nigeria. Watch What Happened.
Speaking with Channels Television, Usman addressed widespread confusion over how Sharia interacts with Nigeria’s secular legal system. He explained that many misunderstandings arise when people mistake individual actions for official legal procedures. Highlighting recent national attention on a tragic case, he clarified: “Deborah was never subjected to trial per the Sharia penal code of Sokoto State.” According to him, no formal Sharia criminal process was initiated prior to the incident, and necessary prosecution procedures were entirely lacking.
Here’s the part most Nigerians don’t realize… Professor Usman stressed that unplanned acts by mobs must not be confused with lawful enforcement under Sharia, which is carefully codified in certain northern states. The distinction is critical for understanding the rule of law in regions that have implemented the Sharia penal code.
He concluded by emphasizing that while northern Nigeria applies Sharia uniquely outside the Arabian Peninsula, the system is legal, structured, and distinct from vigilante or mob actions, which often get misrepresented in the media.
