Speaking to Daily Independent on Monday, February 16, 2026, Shagari emphasized that despite Sokoto being over 99 percent Muslim, people of different religions and ethnicities have lived freely and peacefully. He highlighted that Christians and other non-Muslims reside in the state for business and daily activities without facing discrimination.
Shagari described Sokoto as a community where religious diversity is respected and where Christians are considered brothers and sisters, actively participating in the social and economic life of the state. He added that some indigenes of Sokoto are Christians, and the tradition of coexistence has been maintained over the years.
He concluded, “In Sokoto State, I cannot remember at any point in time when Christians were either harassed or killed. We live with them peacefully.”
